How to start a Bullet Journal in 5 simple steps?

July 16, 2017

The fun thing about a Bullet Journal is, how fast you learn if a layout is working for you or not. It doesn't matter if you like to plan ahead or plan week for week, there's a layout as fancy or as simple as you like for everyone. Even if you don't have a lot of time to have "a hobby like that", a Bullet Journal only takes up as much time as you want to spend with it. Espacially because you don't have to be a full grown artist, your Bullet Journal soon will become your best friend.

1. Keep your everyday layout simple

A fancy title every month is beautiful to have but make sure your everyday planning is fast and simple to layout. So you make sure, that you don't have a planning layout for a week that's hectic and overwhelming. My weekly layout is so simple, that I only need my dotted Leuchtturm1917 (or any Notebook you like, if big or small) and a pen. I don't need a ruler or any colours at first. All the colours and doodles I only add, if I have some time to be creative and at this point, I make some time for these things.

2. Set away time for your Bullet Journal

As everything in organizing your life, it's very important to set aside time to actually write down your tasks and not only make a mental list. For me, I plan everything in my Bullet Journal so I set aside time at least once a week to write down all the tasks for the following week. My Bullet Journal now is like one of my hobies, so I take time for it as I do for sport and date night with my partner or friends.

3. Don't compare your Bullet Journal and progress with others

On Instagram and all the other social media platforms you see everyday beautiful Bullet Journals with incredible drwaings and layouts from all the talented artist this community has to give. If your not able from day one to do all these beautiful spread, don't get discouraged. A lot of Bullet Journalist share theire talent with you in form of tutorials. Per example @bonjournal oder @inkbyjeng. This is another reason why I love this community so much, you'll find help everywhere!

4. You don't have to have every pen or notebook you see from the beginning

It can be overwhelming if you start Bullet Journaling to find out what supplies you acutally need and which ones are simply "nice to have". When I started I only had my Notebook. I started with a Moleskine A5, with dotted pages and the Faber-Castell PITT pens but changed my notebook fast to a Leuchtturm1917, A5, with dotted pages but stayed with my Faber-Castell PITT pens. And still, this is all I need for my Bullet Journal. Don't get me wrong, I'm deeply in love with all my Tombows, Ecoline Colours and all the other brands I have but with these five pens, my notebook, I've got everything I really need for my Bullet Journal.

5. Don't forget to have fun

Having fun with working on your Bullet Journal is important to stay motivated. Life can be exhausting and not every week I find the muse to do a lavish decoration for my weeklies. In this time I just stay with my simple layout and can't be bothered. Just keep it minimalistic. Ryder Carrolls tutorial on www.bulletjournal.com is perfect um to show, that you don't need a lot of time or supplies to organize your life successfully with this system of planning.
